Top 10 London Illustrators

Top 10 London Illustrators

An unashamedly partial list of our favourite illustrators, most of whom live or work or exhibit in London, or maybe just came to visit once.

Julie Khan

Anyone who's subscribed to the Spoonfed newsletter will know how much we love illustration – Julie Khan's weekly images [like the one above] are always fun, quirky and evocative. Prompted by her work we thought we'd compile a wee list of our favourite illustrators. There's no real criteria – it's just people who we like, most (but not all) of whom are London-based. Some of these people we know personally, some we've come across at art fairs or exhibitions, and some are household names. But they're all brilliant, as we hope you'll agree.

Daisy de Villeneuve
Having collaborated with the likes of Liberty, Moet & Chandon and Browns Focus, Daisy's a pretty major name in the worlds of art and illustration. Naïve on the surface, Daisy's work is also steeped in sharp wit.

Julie Vermeille
We first came across Julie's work through a Twitter recommendation and then at Made in Clerkenwell. It's consistently quirky and delicate, with strong narrative threads. Utterly charming.

Katherine Hardy

Katherine's exhibition at Tenderpixel back in 2008 featured a selection of works inspired by literary favourites like Of Mice and Men. Katherine's work is hugely evocative – powerful but never bombastic.

Michelle Thompson
Since graduating from the RCA in 1996, Michelle Thompson has worked with the likes of Reebok, the Guardian and Penguin – her cut and paste collage style is bright, bold and instantly memorable.

Hayley Potter
We've been fans of Hayley for a while now – probably since her show at The Old Sweet Shop in 2008. Her images of animals are warm, funny and rich with characterisation.

Julie Verhoeven
Exotic and glamorous, Julie Verhoeven's images capture the magical allure of fashion at its best. She's worked for Mulberry, Versace, Dazed, Louis Vuitton, Lancome etc etc – in short, she's rather in demand.

Hannah Waldron
It was at Bristol-based gallery Soma's stand at the Spring 2010 instalment of the Affordable Art Fair that we first saw Hannah Waldron's simple silkscreens. Her work is just so adorable!

Jamie Portch
Jamie Portch's illustrations are clean and strikingly simple, but with a careful attention to compositional balance. His style is ideally suited to the clear condensation of otherwise complex ideas.

Yasmin Sandytia
We first saw Yasmin's work at Art Work Space in 2010 – her ink and watercolour drawings of stylised figures are etched with melancholy, loneliness, even boredom. But there's humour too - in fact they're not dissimilar in some ways to some of Edward Lear's darker little images.

Ink Illustration

Another Tenderpixel find. We loved their 2009 exhibition Invisible Library, which featured books alluded to in novels but that never actually existed. Witty, attractive and conceptually intriguing, INK are a collective to keep a careful eye on.
