Serpentine Gallery expands in style...

Zaha Hadid has been enlisted by the Serpentine Gallery to transform a recently acquired contemporary exhibition space in west London.
The award-winning architect, who designed the first of the annual Serpentine pavilions back in 2000, will be working with the gallery again in order to renovate a former munitions depot in Kensington Gardens
The Grade II-listed Magazine building was constructed in 1765 and functioned as a store for Army supplies for approximately 200 years.
It is to be renamed the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, after the Serpentine beat a proposal for the space by YBA shark-pickler Damien Hirst who had planned to exhibit his own work there.
The new building, scheduled to open in time for the 2012 Olympics, will double the space available to the Serpentine, and allow space for education, a shop selling contemporary design, a café and an outdoor area for children and families.
Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones described is as “the opportunity of a lifetime”.
