Afro Festival

With the World Cup literally a few days away and counting, Hackney Globe Trooter and Rich Mix have teamed up to prove that the monumental sporting event can entail so much more than a month of eyes glued to the TV set, necking back your body's weight in beer (although naturally, this is inevitable). Keen to celebrate the first ever major sporting event in Africa and the 50th year of Independence for 17 African nations, Rich Mix brings the Afro Cup Festival to Bethnal Green.

No ordinary festival, Afro Cup spans a whopping 25 days and nights with live African themed music, film, art and food events and all the important games set to be screened on a huge 15 x 10ft screen. As soon as the last match of the day ends, the party gets going. African music will be provided by the best of London's afrocentric bands and DJs will the anticipated 500 strong audiences dancing through the night.

Alongside the football, album launches and film screenings, a special art installation on the mezzanine level of the space will be open to all. The evocative installation transforms the area into a bus terminal and will also include documentary films and music written and performed by former street children in Cape Town. Outside, a street art project transforms the hoardings facing the building.

With Authentic African food, music, art and those all important football screenings, take the organisers advice: "Make your pitch real early - ask the neighbour to feed the cat, sign off sick, say goodbye to the kids and get dow to the Afro Cup Festival."
