Ether - Southbank Centre's annual festival of innovation, art, technology and cross-arts experimentation returns.

Southbank Centre, 24th March- 28th April 2011

Ether – The Southbank’s annual festival celebrating innovation, art, technology and cross-arts experimentation – returns, running from 16th-25th April. With a history of showcasing pioneering music both old and new, the ten-day period sees groundbreaking work in musical performance combined with talks, films, art, installations and some fantastic free events. Alumni include David Byrne, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood and Thom Yorke, Steve Reich and Spaceman Jason Pierce (Spacemen 3).

This year’s line-up is no less sparkling, with highlights including a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s seminal 1968 masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey with a live score from the Philharmonia Orchestra, and special shows from Tim Exile, Pantha du Prince, Wolfgang Voigt, and Micachu & the Shapes.

However, we’re most excited about a set from post-punk pioneers Killing Joke on the 1st of April. The group, a major influence on  bands such as Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins and Metallica, are due to perform songs from their eagerly anticipated new album, as well as material from their seminal back catalogue.
