Line-ups, updates and news for HowTheLightGetsIn 2013.

Howthelightgetsin 2013

When: 23rd May - 2nd June 2013
Where: Hay-on-Wye
How much: from £5 to £138

A festival with a difference, HowTheLightGetsIn is less about wading through acres of knee-deep mud in order to queue at some portaloos, and more about art, music and thought. Taking place in Hay-on-Wye, the small Welsh town probably most famous for the annual Hay Literary Festival, every year HowTheLightGetsIn features a broad range of exciting thinkers and eclectic bands.

The festival is held at The Globe at Hay, home to non-profit art and cultural organisation the Institute of Art and Ideas. The main attraction is the range and calibre of the thinkers involved: for 2013 speakers include Stephen Frears, Ian Blair, Will Hutton, Shirley Williams,AS Byatt, Jim Crace and Terry Pratchett amongst over 150 others giving talks, lectures and debates based around a loose theme of 'Errors, Lies and Adventure'.

The key though is the way each event is curated. By and large this isn't just some big names trotting out the usual "Hey, I've just got a new book out" nonsense; here, real, important, interesting issues are explored through carefully put-together and well-chaired panel discussions.

This year the festival is also embracing music in a big way. Drawing in bands, producers and DJs from across the spectrum, 2013's event includes the likes of King Charles, Man Like Me, Stealing Sheep, Marques Toliver, Jeffery Lewis, Serafina Steer, Alessi’s Ark, Sam Lee, Nick Mulvey, Utah Saints, Abigail Wyles, Phidel, Julia Beil, The Correspondents, Young Husband among the highlights, as well as sprinkling of DJ talent in the shape of Jamie Anderson and Deepgrove, Andrew Wetherall and Cedric Maison.

We've been the last couple of years, and can readily testify that HowTheLightGetsIn is basically the best thing ever.
