Line-ups, updates and news for Meltdown 2011

The Southbank Centre,  June 2011

It’s been eighteen years since Meltdown Festival first began, and since then it has seen an all star cast of acts, not to mention curators. Since its origins, such leading lights as Elvis Costello, John Peel, Nick Cave, Scott Walker, David Bowie, Patti Smith and Jarvis Cocker have taken the reins and made the festival into something unique.

This year sees 60s pop icon and former lead singer of Kinks Ray Davis take over the curating duties of the festival.

Compared to most festivals where you think ‘I want to see that’, with this one, it’s more ‘They’re playing with WHO? I want to know what the hell that’s gonna sound like!’ 2008's festival saw the likes of seminal post-rock collective The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra melding their haunting overtures with queen of art punk and poetry Patti Smith. Also there was all new line-up of the Plastic Ono Band – which hasn’t performed under that name since 1975 - featuring Sean Lennon and Japanese noise-pop-visual extravaganza Cornelius.

Two weeks of huge name acts and incredible collaborations, spread throughout Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall? That’s definitely worth a look.

Meltdown Festival, will run in June with dates and line-up yet to be confirmed. To view further information and to purchase tickets visit the festival website here.
