Line-up, news and updates for the Partager Jazz Festival this May

Charlie Wright's International

When: 5- 8 May
Where: Hall One & Two @ Kings Place, 90 York Way, N1
How much: Tickets from £9.50

The purpose of this 4-day London jazz gala is to eliminate the geographical boundaries that otherwise stand in the way of international musical cross pollination. Or to speak plainly, this is an event where vanguard and contemporary jazz outfits and artists from New York, London and Paris collaborate to bring tantalising musical imports to our attention, and perhaps stimulate something new between themselves.

The successful Partager programme at Charlie Wright's International has meant it now has a festival all of its own. Driving its achievements are jazz concert organisers Art Work Music, who believe that by bringing international jazz scenes together, they will engage both the audience and performers. Below is the program of events.

May 5:

7:30: DJ Ango featuring Zhenya Strigalev & Nick Ramm
Leading London alto-saxophonist (Robert Mitchell, Foley, Chris Dave) and top UK pianist (Cinematic Orchestra,
Matthew Herbert) present a contemporary twist to Django Reinhardt RE-arrangements.
8:30: Emile Parisien Quartet
Rising star Alto Saxophonist Parisien won France’s Victoires du Jazz 2009 Best New Act award. A sparky,
contemporary player (Michel Portal, Jacky Terrasson, Paco Sery) combining free jazz and lyrical phrasing with
dynamic results.
9:35: Andy Emler MegaOctet / Marc Ducret
A highly energetic and varied cocktail of musical influences, including Zappa, Miles, Debussy, Prince, Reich and
Ellington. Having earned a Django D’Or this ensemble is led by a distinguished luminary of French jazz featuring an
array of talent including Claude Tchamitchian and Eric Echampard.

May 6:
7:30: Matthieu Donarier Trio featuring Manu Codija
This award-winning sax, guitar and drums trio presents original compositions and rearrangements of Brassens, Monk,
Trenet and Satie.
8:30: Sylvain Luc
Here presenting his new solo album, this Basque guitar phenomenon’s sensitive and nuanced approach is terminally
romantic. His collaborations include Birelli Lagrene, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Elvin Jones, Didier Lockwood.
9:35: Laika featuring Robert Glasper
Spanish/African influenced sultry vocalist featuring Grammy nominated American pianist known for his collaborations
with the cream of New York’s hip hop scene (Mos Def, J Dilla, Jay-Z). A Billy Holiday tribute, this London debut
highlights their album “Misery” (Blujazz).

May 7:
7:30: Jean-Marc Folz / Stephan Oliva Duo
This bass clarinet and piano duo carve forms in permanent transformation; stretched motives, stacked rhythms, always
fragile… their telepathy, a whisper.
8:30: Marc Turner Duo / Baptiste Trotignon
Award winning French pianist (Tom Harrell, Kenny Wheeler, Didier Lockwood) and lauded American tenorist (Kurt
Rosenwinkel, Dave Holland) drawing inspiration from their collaborations on Trotignon’s album“Share” (Naïve).
9:35: FLY (Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard)
This US dream team trio includes 2/3rds of Brad Mehldau Trio. Here playing dynamic, beautifully poised music from
their album Sky & Country (ECM).

May 8:

building bridges with each other.

A piano and drum duo…French-Japanese dynamite explosions! Walk, jump around, and stumble against these
dynamic women who compose and improvise with rock-jazz-pop-free-heavy-metal influences.
8:30: Julia Sarr
Her golden voice brings us close to the raw emotional beauty of the ancestral art of Senegalese storytellers. With a
solo debut at Carnegie Hall under her belt, this French-based African vocalist garners huge praise from Youssou
N'Dour as 'the fresh face of African music”.
9:35: Sophia Domancich, William Parker & Hamid Drake Trio
This magical union features France’s foremost female jazz pianist and the formidable mastery of this New York
rhythm-section bassist Parker (Cecil Taylor, Rashied Ali) and drummer Drake.
