Throughout Shrewsbury, Shropshire, 3rd-12th July
Subtitled 'A Festival of Ideas', Shift Time is a ten-day festival taking place in Shrewsbury, the hometown of important science fellow Charles Darwin. February of this year saw the 200th birthday of the worm-studying Victorian, but sensibly the folks of Shrewsbury have waited until the summer to hold their inaugural festival.
Shift Time sees all manner of leading writers, artists and thinkers converge on the historic Shropshire market town to celebrate the continuing influence of Darwin's theories of evolution. Dutch kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen presents a 13-metre long sculpture, oddball performance artist Marcus Coates is showing new video and sound installation work, and there's something called 'The Weather Man' – a triple-bill evening that simultaneously celebrates and criticises Darwin's words and deeds.
In addition, there's a whole host of other events and activities, involving tortoises, robots, nature trails, arts, crafts, film screenings, music and a chap called Feng Ru Lee performing, apparently, as her alter-ego Milee the Sheep. Gosh, artists are a strange old bunch, aren't they?
