Stoke Newington Literary Festival

Line-ups, updates and news for Stoke Newington Literary Festival 2011.

Where: Stoke Newington, London
When: 3 - 5 June 2011
How much: Prices range from free to £10

Stoke Newington's first ever Literary Festival launched last year with great success. They are back this June across a range of interesting Stokey venues. The historic home to radical writers, thinkers and dissidents will host an array of the most interesting and innovative authors and poets.

There are loads of events during the day for kids, including an appearance by Little Britain star David Walliams, who will be talking about his new children's book Billionaire Boy, and even a Dr. Seuss event with The Cat in the Hat in attendance.

The adult portion of the festival kicks-off with a Gala Launch event on Friday, with Labour MP Diane Abbot raising the curtain on the weekend's programme. This year's line-up features appearances by local legend Stewart Lee, children's author/illustrator Linda Grant, comedian Alexi Sayle, and Mister Nice Guy himself, Howard Marks.

We're particularly excited about the Firestation Bookswap on Sunday; bring a book you would like to swap, and pop into the library for a piece of cake, a natter, and exchange books and conversation with other attendees and guest authors.

There's a two-hour event dedicated to one of Stoke Newington's most famous denizens, Edgar Allan Poe. Legendary director Steven Berkoff will be making an appearance, talking about his production of The Tell Tale Heart that's currently touring, after which he'll be unveiling a new bust of Poe outside the Fox Reformed restaurant, which rests on the site of the school Poe attended when living in Stoke Newington.
