The Big Chill Festival

Line-ups, updates and news for Big Chill 2011

Safety first

When: 4 - 7 August 2011
Where: Eastnor castle, Eastnor, Ledbury, Herefordshire
How much: Weekend ticket £165

Held in the stunning grounds of Eastnor Castle, this family-friendly festival within easy reach of London has proved persistently popular, thanks to a great campsite, friendly crowds and stellar line-ups that show no sign of abating. Last year included music from Alphabeat, Basement Jaxx, Mr Scruff, Norman Jay, Toddla T and Tom Middleton. That's just a sample of a truly incredible line up!

With comedy from headline acts and the best facilities of any mid-size festival from actually good food to childcare to sorted toilets, there's nothing not to love about Big Chill. However, trendy London types like ourselves often resist: the place is full of kids, the music stops too early, it's all too twee and organised. The preponderance of wasted parents fiddling with their state-of-the-art baby buggies is an annoying symptom of 'safe-raving'. However, these are just teenage complaints. Once you're there, you will have the time of your life and see brilliant music all day long.

'The Big Chill is more than a festival, it's a way of life.' So runs the boast on their website. No, it's a way of combining getting seriously wasted and dancing about with middle-aged responsibilities like jobs and kids. And a very good way at that.
