Founded in 1895, The Proms is one of the most famous classical musical events in the world. Spread over eight weeks in the summer, the BBC Proms or The Henry Wood Promenade Concerts presented by the BBC, as it is more properly known, consists of over 70 orchestral concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, eight chamber concerts at Cadogan Hall and a selection of Proms in the Park events on the last night.
'Proms' is short for promenade concerts, as visitors to the concerts were originally able to stroll around throughout the performance: Proms founder Robert Newman originally intended The Proms to encourage attendance from the kinds of people who wouldn't normally go and see classical music. Which all makes the comments made in 2008 by Culture Minister Margaret Hodge a little ironic: she said that 'the Proms was one of several big cultural events that many people did not feel comfortable attending'.
What a load of rubbish: the Proms rule!
There's also interactive family events and an online Proms event planner which allows you to make bookings faster and easier.
Details of specific events and performing musicians will be announced at noon on Thursday 14 April. Booking will open at 9.00am on Saturday 7 May.
