Time to dust off those flags and bongo drums: After more than 10 years confined to the countryside, the internationally-hailed WOMAD festival is back in town for a two-day shindig of world music and beer-fuelled cultural exchange on September 19th and 20th. The event is part of the Tower Festival at the Tower Of London and promises a United Nations-worthy line-up of artists from countries
like South Korea, India, Algeria, Syria and Zimbabwe.
WOMAD, which stands for World of Music Arts and Dance, is an annual affair in England, except it’s usually held in Charlton Park in Wiltshire in July. First started by Peter Gabriel in 1982, it’s aimed at getting people of the world to better understand each other through music. We're psyched it’s finally decided to come to the capital though it’s a pity that it couldn’t have been organised as a standalone festival. Definitely having a word with Pete about that.
On the menu alongside music are workshops, food and drink and other bits and bobs of entertainment through the day. The event is picnic-style so pack the mats and coolers. And oh yeah, kids go free so there’s no need to fob them off to the grandparents - unless they're a proper nuisance. Here’s a peek at the lineup:
Saturday September 19th
Dulsori (South Korea)
Paprika Balkanicus (Romania/Serbia/Slovenia)
Nathan Flutebox Lee (India/UK)
The Imagined Village (UK)
Khaled (Algeria)
Sunday September 20th
Siyaya (Zimbabwe)
Abdullah Chhadeh and Syriana (Syria)
Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara (UK/Gambia)
Tony Allen (Nigeria)
The Bays/Heritage (UK)
Ticket prices are £35 for a day and £65 for the whole weekend. For more information, click here.
