Everything you need to know about the World Shakespeare Festival.

Where: Various venues across London and the UK

When: 23 April - November 2012

Being held by the Royal Shakespeare Company as part of the Cultural Olympiad, a programme of artistic events across the capital to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics, the World Shakespeare Festival will bring together a vast array of global artists and performers. Aiming to celebrate and unite the capital’s many different cultures through the power of the Bard’s plays, the festival will include representatives from theatre companies across the UK and around the world.

While many of the performances will be taking place across London, there will also be productions up and down the country as part of the festival, with regional theatres such as the Newcastle Theatre Royal and Birmingham Old Rep on board. There is even the opportunity to watch some performances from the comfort of your sofa, as the organisers plan to put a selection of the productions online.

One of the flagship events is being held at London’s Globe Theatre, the home of Shakespeare in the capital. For theatregoers who like to flex their linguistic muscles, each of the Bard’s 37 plays is being performed in a different language over the course of the summer. Other London theatres getting involved include the Almeida  Theatre, the Barbican and the National Theatre.

The World Shakespeare Festival is set to be an integral part of the Cultural Olympiad in the summer of 2012, providing theatregoers with the chance to experience a rich and diverse range of different cultural interpretations of well known material.
