Markets, Pop-Ups, Festivals - May's best Food and Drink events
26 April, 2012
by: Spoonfed Food And Drink
From pop-up restaurants to markets and festivals: our selection of the five best food and drink events taking place across London next month.

Tuesday 1st May
Cardinal Place Market @ Cardinal Place
Free, 11am-3pm
Victoria is a bit of a grim old area right now, what with the rain and endless construction shenanigans, but this May at least there'll be something to brighten up the lives of the area's food-loving workforce. Cardinal Place, that massive new glass thing opposite Westminster Cathedral [pictured above], is playing host to a seasonal food market, with a choice selection of 20 stores selling all sorts of goodies – from Argentinian empanadas to vegan Creole food, French cheeses and English fudge.
Wednesday 2nd May
Protein Academy @ 18 Hewett Street
£35, 7pm
We're not quite sure what the Protein Academy is – some sort of creative brand network it seems – but this event they're putting on looks like a cracker. Curated by coffee experts DunneFrankowski, the evening consists of a cutting edge exploration of taste – both as a sense and a sensibility. Combining cocktails, food and science are: chemist Dave Hart from the Institute of Food Research, Ryan Chetiyawardana from the uniquely innovative Whistling Stop, and Spoonfed's favourite food design studio, the totally brilliant Blanch and Shock.
Saturday 5th – Monday 7th May
Foodies Festival @ Hampton Court Palace
£15, 10am-7pm
What better setting for a food festival than the regal splendour of Hampton Court Palace? This May sees the venerable old pile taken over by over 100 exhibitors, showcasing their wares – from artisan food to summery cocktails (let's just hope the weather improves). There's also a cookery school, various family-friendly masterclasses, some chefs off the telly in the form of Levi Roots and Cyrus Todiwala, and even a dedicated Wine Village.
Wednesday 16th – Saturday 19th May
Delicious by D5 @ Secret Location
£5, times vary
Tim Anderson – the bespectacled genius/mad scientist who won MasterChef in 2011 – is back in the limelight to host a pop-up restaurant “inspired” by the new Citroen DS5. The five-course tasting menu riffs on the five senses and, amazingly, costs just £5 per person. All proceeds are going to FareShare, a charity that attempt to tackle both food waste and food poverty by channelling surplus restaurant product to organisations that work with the disadvantaged. With such a good cause, perhaps they could have been charging more.
Sunday 20th May
RAW Wine Fair @ Old Truman Brewery
£20, 10am-6pm
The jury's very much still out on the whole natural wine thing, but if they're to be convinced then RAW is the one to do it. Taking over the Old Truman Brewery for two days this May, RAW sees over 180 growers from across the world showcasing their wares. The emphasis is on transparency of process and, more importantly perhaps, deliciousness. There's also food from a host of great places, like Scandilicious, Hoxton Beach and Ducksoup. But if you're still not convinced by natural wines, there's always the Real Wine Fair taking place at exactly the same time over in Bloomsbury.
