Covent Garden Christmas Lights Preview

If you missed the annual switching on of the Oxford Street christmas lights then you'll be excited to know that the Covent Garden event which is packed with entertainment and fun is just around the corner. Covent Garden not only hosts its own switching on of the Christmas lights, but it also holds various events in the lead up to the big day for all the family. The best part is that the fun starts tonight!

From November 9th Covent Garden will be launching 'A Very Merry Christmas' - the beginning of a wonderland filled with winter delights. For the first time in three years there will be the return of a 40ft Christmas tree that will take centre stage on the piazza. Bands as well as choirs will will be performing throughout the Christmas period, the food market will be open and story-telling for the little ones will be available.

United Visual Artists are making a dazzling return this year by creating a bespoke installation of four freefalling chandeliers which will be made up of over 600 LED tubes and 46,000 individual LEDs. In addition to the 40ft Christmas tree, there will also be a giant 37ft topiary reindeer, as well as 10ft candy canes to greet visitors.

Musical performances from top artists and some of London's most talented choirs will grace the stages at Covent Garden every Thursday and Saturday from November 12th. There will be free musical performances from the City of London Choir, the City Chamber Choir as well as more in the lead-up. 2008 saw the likes of The Saturdays, VV Brown and Keane performing as a part of Superbusking, which will return this year with a line-up set to rival years past. Although the performances are kept top secret, be sure to swing by the Garden throughout the holiday season - you never know who you might see!

For those looking to take the kids along, there will be plenty of entertainment to keep them happy. There will be a variety of free, educational workshops for children to learn about making costumes, decorations, or even creating Christmas puppets. Professional story-tellers will be conjuring magical adventures in a cosy candlelit atmosphere for children and parents alike. There will also be the opportunity for reindeer petting.

For food lovers the Covent Garden Real Market will be expanding to accomodate the Christmas craze. Alongside its regular stalls, they will be providing all types of Christmas delights with luxury mince pies, Christmas cakes, cheese, oysters and chocolates. The Real Food Market will be transformed into your one-stop Christmas shop.
