London Boxing Day

It's Spoonfed's Arts Editor's birthday! But you don't really care about that...

Boxing Day

When laden down with gifts and Christmas pudding, Boxing Day seems like a complete afterthought.  What Boxing Day really offers is a chance to gracefully duck out of the rising tension that comes with the territory of family holidays. You might be surprised at what events are on in London on Boxing Day, take a look at some of our top picks for how to escape your family when Christmas all becomes a bit too much.

Go to the theatre

Legally Blonde: The Musical is perhaps your best bet for Boxing Day theatre. You may end up dragging the family along, but this modern classic will certainly take you your mind off any family feuds with its story of love, law and sororities. There are also a number of London pantomime shows finishing their run and this is a great time to catch any shows you didn't have a chance to see before Christmas.

Be a tourist

A number of popular tourist attractions will be open on Boxing Day including the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the London Dungeons While there will still be crowds - it is a holiday weekend after all - this is a much better time to experience the most famous landmarks of London than the middle of the summer!

Do festive stuff
Get out of the house and head down to Trafalgar Square for their annual Christmas tree and caroling. If singing isn't your cup of tea, the Winter Wonderland festival in Hyde Park will be open on Boxing Day and will offer plenty of different activities for each family member. Finally, take advantage of the numerous open air ice rinks, including the wonderful Natural History Museum ice rink. They'll only be around for so long.

Buy stuff
The post-Christmas sales kick off with a vengeance throughout the city. If you fancy bargains galore then you're going to have to fight your way through the crowds, but by George it might be worth it to save a few pennies on a new scarf or something.

Go for a walk
After the customary over-indulgence of Christmas Day, it's probably not a bad idea to try and get at least a tiny bit of fresh air and excercise. London is full of fabulous parks in which to pottter, with dog (or festive can of Red Stripe) in hand so why not check out our ten favourite London parks.

Watch some football

If all else fails, Boxing Day football is always an option with ten premier league matches throughout the day. Buy tickets for the live games or just send the rest of the family out to the theatre, tourist attractions, seasonal events and shopping while you watch at home! There's also cricket on from around midnight - India vs Australia. Should be a cracker.

Boxing Day doesn't have to be the day of leftovers and fights with your in-laws, take advantage of everything on in London on Boxing Day!

Looking for things to do at Christmas? Or maybe you're looking for things to do at New Year? Or just all events going on in London.
