What's on and things to do on St George's Day 2010

St George’s Day is officially on Friday 23rd April, but that’s no good because everyone’s at work, so a concert in the style of a traditional English fête will take place beneath Nelson’s Column from 1pm until 6pm on the Saturday afternoon. The lavish and free St George’s Day concert plans to feature contemporary music with English roots themed around the ‘Rhythm of London’, and British music legend Joe Brown will be headlining the event. Winners of the 2009 Busking Underground competition will also be performing, as will Rhythms of the City Samba Band, Sir John Cass All Stars, Tyler Rix (Saxophone), Ark Schools’ Scholarship Choir, Croydon Young Musicians Ceilidh Band, Jonathan Chan (violin) and Hounslow Wind Band. Street theatre performances of St George and the Dragon will accompany the St George’s Day musical delights, and song sheets will be handed out for all to participate in the true English Music Hall tradition.
Aside from the St George’s Day concert, Andersen’s English is a great piece of British theatre to go watch, whilst the Very Sanderson exhibition celebrates one of Blighty’s most prolific textiles designers.
A Shakespearean celebration of the Bard’s birthday, which falls on the same day as Saint George’s, will take place at the Globe Theatre on the weekend of Sunday April 18th. Expect performances and recitals of Shakespeare’s most popular works with interactive games and poetry workshops that will get the kids involved too. Or catch a performance of Macbeth on Friday 23 April.
A couple of other Shakespeare’s masterpieces are on show throughout London around the playwright’s birthday, such as Othello and The Tempest.

Pubs and restaurants across London will also be tipping their caps to St George by serving traditional English delicacies for a proper knees up, so get stuck in to some steak and kidney pudding or fish and chips, washed down with plenty of cider naturally. Ye Olde Watling in the City will be marking St George’s Day in such a fashion.
