Have you heard the word?...

A facebook campaign has been launched to make the surf-rock classic 'Surfin' Bird ' Top of the Pops this Christmas. Spurred on by Rage Against The Machine's victory over X Factor winner Joe McElderry last year, 460,000 fans have pledged their support in an attempt to undermine what they see as the reality show's dominance of the charts. The Trashmen's 1963 hit has seen a resurgence in popularity after a recent episode of Family Guy in which Peter Griffin becomes obsessed with singing it, but in order to reach the top spot it will have to sell around 500,000 digital copies.

The attempt is being taken seriously by betting giants Ladbrokes who have given the song odds of 3/1. Speaking on behalf of the company, Alex Donohue said: “The Surfin’ Bird Facebook campaign is gaining some serious momentum which we can’t ignore. If it is a success we will be shelling out thousands.”

Other contenders for the top spot have been awarded longer odds by the company. Among the X-Factor hopefuls Matt Cardle has been given odds of 7/4 while boy band One Direction stand at 7/2 , Rebecca Ferguson 8/1 and Cher Lloyd 13/1. Jon Cage, whose song 4′33″, which is four minutes and 33 seconds of silence and is also being released as an X-Factor protest, has been given odds of 14/1 with only 20,000 fans on Facebook. At least he's done better than glamour model Katie Price whose odds stand at 200/1 for her reaching number 1. Clearly she hasn't heard that the bird is the word.
