Independent record labels to set up market stalls for a day...

With the rising success of Record Store Day, a follow-up event has been arranged for 21st May where Europe’s leading independent labels will set up market stalls and label bosses will sell their records to the public first hand.

The event, named Independent Label Market, will take place on Berwick Street in the heart of Soho. An affluent hub of musical activity since the '60s, Berwick Street not only welcomed the first market in 1778 but also houses a number of London’s best independent stores, including Sister Ray, Selectadisc, Reckless Records and Phonica.

Backed by Westminster Council, the idea behind Independent Label Market aims to further the awareness of good music and the people who bring this music to the surface of popularity. It’s a hands-on opportunity with focus on both the label and the wealth of people who continue to buy records and keep the industry alive.

Labels already confirmed for the day include Domino, Rough Trade, Bella Union, Tri-Angle, Merok, Angular Records, Heavenly and Transparent, with many more to follow.

Taking it back to the old school, each label’s stall will be stacked with crates of vinyl, including a handful of limited releases. Live performances for the event are currently being confirmed and this promises to be yet another valuable day promoting the best in independent music.
