The Libertines have announced that they will reunite to play the main stage at this year's Reading and Leeds Festival.

The shows are the only planned for the London band that split in 2004, and follow growing speculation in the media that a reunion was on the cards – despite singer Pete Doherty suggesting in a recent interview that such a reformation could be a "f*cking disaster". They promise to be special performances from a group that gained notoriety in the early 2000s for the volatile relationship between its members, which led to their eventual demise.

The announcement also includes the headliners for the weekend, which organisers Festival Republic claim is “the only place to be for the serious music fan over the summer”. Heading up the bill are Axl Rose's latest incarnation of Guns 'N' Roses (Reading Fri, Leeds Sun), Canada’s art-rock outfit Arcade Fire (Reading Sat, Leeds Fri), and reformed '90s punk band Blink-182 (Reading Sun, Leeds Sat).

The festivals, which take place over the August bank holiday weekend, look to be the hot ticket of the summer, with weekend tickets for the Reading site having already sold out. There is still limited availability for Leeds weekend tickets, with day tickets for both sites also up for grabs. The stellar line-up also includes Josh Homme’s Queens of the Stone Age, with the NME Stage announcing their headliners as LCD Soundsystem, Pendulum and Klaxons.

See here for full information. Tickets start at £75 for day tickets and £180 for weekend tickets.
