Looking Back with Blink-182

Looking Back with Blink-182

We take a look over the back-catalogue of Blink-182, the only band to ever sneak a paedo joke into regular MTV rotation.

It’s been a big week in the pop punk world. First Sum 41 pulled out of the Kerrang Tour due to injury, leaving New Found Glory to go it alone, and now Blink-182 have been announced as the surprise headliners for this year’s  Eden Festival, and have to added the All American Rejects as their main support for their forthcoming UK tour, which includes two-dates at the O2 Arena.

With all this going on, we thought it would be a good time to take a quick whistle stop tour of Blink’s early work. Luckily our live music editor is a true dyed-in-the-wool pop punk who spent his formative years drinking Irish Harp, failing with girls and listening to the Get Up Kids, Saves the Day, Less Than Jake and Osker. Here are 3 of his faves.

Dammit

Dom: “Dude Ranch was the first Blink 182 album I came across, and I still secretly play it when I think my house mates are out.  Alongside ‘Josie’, ‘Dammit’ was the big track off the album, and showcases a time when Blink played drums super fast and had a penchant for wallet chains. They look like total nerds in the video, but in 1999, everyone dressed like that.”

Dumpweed

Dom “Sadly over-shadowed by the massive ‘What’s My Age Again’ and ‘All the Small Things’, ‘Dumpweed’ is the hidden anthem on ‘Enema of the State’.  It definitely has the best chorus of any Blink-182 song in my humble opinion.

First Date

Dom: “’Take Off Your Pants and Jacket’ was a bit of a disappointment really. At the time I had started listening to American Nightmare and Comeback Kid, and the album’ s slick production made it sound a bit too much like an Avirl Lavigne record or something. I wasn’t the only one, Tom Delonge seemed bummed out by it, and he started Box Car Racer as a way to even up the score sheet.

That said, I did really like the video for ‘First Date’ in a cheesy sort of way. I especially like the girl grinding along on her braces scene and the uncomfortable paedo joke at the end.”

Blink-182 play the O2 Arena on the 8th and 9th of June.
