Animal Collective Announce Design Collaboration

You wouldn’t automatically link an experimental ‘freak-folk’ collective with a Californian archipelago. But fact is sometimes stranger than fiction – as the multi-talented members of Animal Collective this week revealed not only a passion for scuba diving, but their intention to help to save the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Baja California with a new range of shoes designed for Keep Clothing Co.
Each member of the band has designed their own shoe – with all proceeds going to The Socorro Island Conservation Fund – in an effort to combat illegal fishing off the coast of California that is damaging the unique biosphere there.
“Josh and I have been scuba diving together for a number of years and the Revillagigedos was one of the most amazing places I have ever seen. Hopefully this project will protect the animals of the Revillagigedos through at least one more fishing season and draw more attention to the global problem of illegal fishing,” says Brian Weitz (Geologist).
The shoes will be available to pre-order from 31st October, but won't be shipped or appear in shops until March next year – although fans’ patience will be rewarded with the bonus cassette of previously unreleased music that come with their shoes.
The band’s Deakin explains his sympathy with the sharks that are most in danger from illegal fishing: “I once saw sharks as a potentially frightening creature and little else. I have come to understand that they are a crucial part of a highly stressed and collapsing ecosystem,” perhaps shedding light on the lyrics to the song ‘Unsolved Mysteries’: ‘I'll go to sleep worrying / That blood in the dark will attract the sharks / Who are not violent, we've all got hungry bellies.’
