August: London Comedy

August: London Comedy

31 July, 2009
by: Spoonfed Team

Yes, most of the city's comedians have packed off to the Edinburgh Fringe but never fear! The Spoonfed comedy team have picked out five of the best gigs (and a whole festival) in London this August to see you through.

 Monday 1st August
Jerry Sadowitz @ Leicester Square Theatre

Genius magician and controversial stand-up Jerry Sadowitz brings his not-for-the-faint-hearted brand of comedy to the Leicester Square Theatre for this work in progress gig. Born in the US and brought up in Glasgow, Sadowitz is revered on the comedy circuit and regarded as one of the best magicians in the business, having written several books on magic and invented many of his own cunning tricks. His style is definitely best suited for punters who like their comedy vitriolic and fierce.

Monday 1st-Sunday 28th August

Camden Fringe Festival @ various venues

For punters and performers who can’t always afford (or be bothered) to make the trip to the Edinburgh Fringe, there’s a pretty good alternative on offer, right here in the capital. Spread over several different northern venues during the month of August, the Camden Fringe has loads of comedy shows to check out. Our faves include Hal Cruttenden, Helen Keen, The Bright Club, James Mullinger and Luke Toulson.

Tuesday 2nd August- Saturday 10th September

Doug Stanhope
@ Leicester Square Theatre

Considering Stanhope whinges about coming to London every year and yet, stays a little bit longer each time, we think he might be telling porkies. For the entire month of August, the nihilistic American returns to the LST with his longest UK stint to date, no doubt with just as much stirring cynicism and fury as ever. One of the hottest comedy tickets of the summer - don't miss it (or take your mum).

Tuesday 2nd-Saturday 13th August
Lawrence Leung @ Soho Theatre

The geeky Australian comic is back at the Soho this month with another obsession to discuss. Forget Rubik's cubes and Star Wars. This time, Leuing is after something a little more mature: he wants his own jetpack and will stop at nothing to get one, even if it involves recruiting a inventor to make one for him. Illustrating his quest with movie clips, voice mails, emails and text messages, this is a funny and uplifting tale with a climax worth waiting for.

Wednesday 31st August-Saturday 10th September
Neil Hamburger @ Soho Theatre

America's brand of comedy marmite, Neil Hamburger has to be one of the most uncompromising and inventive comedans around. Constantly subverting comedy conventions and always performing kamikaze recklessness, here he brings his brand new show to the Soho Theatre direct from the Edinburgh Fringe.
