August: London Exhibitions

by: Spoonfed Team

The Spoonfed Arts Team pick out the biggest exhibitions opening in London this August.

Katherine Jones

From 3rd August
Art on Poetry @ Saison Poetry Library
Kaleid Editions – the artists' books gallery – continues its four-month series of exhibitions at the Saison Poetry Library. Art on Poetry involves exhibitions, interventions, residencies, and other assorted events, and this August features strangely spectral work on paper by Katherine Jones as well as a new animation by Meghana Bisineer – the product of the artist's residency at the library.

From 9th August
Ron Arad's Curtain Call @ The Roundhouse
Multi-talented artist/architect/designer Ron Arad has constructed an amazing curtain made of 5,600 silicon rods at The Roundhouse. It acts as a kind of canvas for a broad range of films, performances and interactive pieces – all put on by artists and performers specially selected by Arad himself. Expect appearances form the likes of Hussein Chalayan, Christian Marclay and David Shrigley.

From 11th August
Signs of Struggle @ V&A
An exhibition examining the issues confronting and confronted by postmodernist photographers. Ideas around self-reflexivity, identity, ownership, originality, the medium of photography itself, and the collapsing of traditional attempts at 'realism' are all explored to a greater or lesser extent in the works of, among others, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman and Clare Strand.

From 12th August
Orientations @ Hoxton Art Gallery
A two-pronged exploration of movement, form, atmosphere and the lone female figure at Hoxton Art Gallery this August and September. There's photography referencing Dutch golden age painting by Guler Ates alongside new video and stills by Sara Hibbert. The exhibition's opening night also sees a performance by contemporary dancer and choreographer Kerrily Aitchison.

From 20th August
Mind Sports Olympiad @ ULU
A week of 'mind sports' at ULU this August. We don't really know what defines a 'mind' sport, but it sure sounds intriguing. Pit your brain against the best across a whole myriad of activities - from chess and Monopoly to poker, backgammon, scrabble, cribbage and a load of other things we've never heard of (like Boku, London Lowball and Decamentathlon...)
