Francis Bacon at Tate Britain

A major exhibition of works by Britain's greatest Twentieth Century painter. Francis Bacon's work is big, dark, troubling and utterly brilliant.
Best For: Everybody. This is the must-see exhibition of the year

London Design Festival 
13th – 23rd September
All over London, from Brick Lane to the Royal Festival Hall, museums and galleries are coming together for a ten-day festival of all things design. Looks like fun!
Best For: Unusual cultural activities across our fair capital

Rothko at Tate Modern 
From 26th September
Paintings from the Tate Modern collection alongside works from Japan make up this major retrospective of the big American abstract painter.
Best For: Fans of abstraction and in-depth aesthetic theory

Gerhard Richter at Serpentine 
From 23rd September
Gerhard Richter has re-arranged 4900 brightly coloured squares and put them in the Serpentine. Aren't Germans an imaginative lot?
Best For: People who like colours, or squares, or the number 4900

Cold War Modern at the V&A 
From 25th September
Good old V&A: this massive exhibition explores all the cool designs produced on both sides of the Atlantic up until the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Best For: Commies and commie-bashers alike
