Climate Camp swoops on South East London

Climate Camp organisers have revealed the site of their latest protest to be the in Blackheath. This weeklong sit-in protest has got the MET’s knickers in a twist because the location was kept secret until the very last minute.

In the early afternoon activists were informed of the location via text message and a co-ordinated "swoop" has descended on Blackheath followed by hundreds of police and press.

Protesters campaigning against the Government’s environmental policy gathered at different points around London before being told where the actual event was taking place. Hundreds of people gathered at six initial meeting points including the Bank of England and Shell headquarters although it is expected that several thousand will join the demonstrators throughout the week.

Protesters then marched throughout the city, taking police officers on a cat and mouse tour of London before settling in Blackheath. Around midday groups in West London had begun to move towards Trafalgar Square, while those in the east remained put, leading many observers to correctly guess that the event would take place in East London.

The MET have already come under heavy criticism for their dealings with protesters after riots at the G20 summit in April but it’s hoped that no further violence will occur on this occasion.

The exact location of the site is marked on the map here. You can follow all the live action on the Climate Camp website and on Twitter with the hashtag #ClimateCamp
