Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominations Announced

26 August, 2009
by: Spoonfed Team

Young stand-up Russell Kane has been nominated for 'Best Comedy Show' for the second year running at the 29th Edinburgh Comedy Awards (or 'Eddies' as they are now known) alongside Tim Key, John Bishop, Idiots of Ants, Tom Wrigglesworth and Jon Richardson.

Again, Kane explores sociology in his hour-long show Human Dressage, Yorkshireman Tom Wrigglesworth spins a good yarn about a disaster on a Virgin Trains in Open Letter to Richard Branson, Tim Key presents a hilarious collection of short and silly poems in the charmingly-named Slutcracker, favoured sketch group Idiots of Ants play out scenes from World War II in This is War, Liverpudlian ex-footballer John Bishop tells stories about his ex-wife and ex-career in Elvis Has Left The Building and witty curmudgeon Jon Richardson ponders on why the human race is at its weakest moment in history in This Guy At Night.

The judging panel is made up of seven professionals and three comedy punters representing the public. The panel is chaired this year by Tim Arthur, Time Out's comedy critic. 'Best Comedy Show' wins £8,000 and an invitation to perform at the Montreal, Toronto and Chicago Just for Laughs Comedy Festivals while the 'Best Newcomer' and 'Panel Prize' wins £4000 each.

This year's nominations are bound to cause controversy as no women have been short-listed for either 'Best Show' or 'Best Newcomer'.

The winners will be announced on Saturday the 29th August.
