Ian Carey Interview

Ian Carey Interview

We catch up with US DJ Ian Carey ahead of his Pure Pacha gig this Saturday.

How's your year been, what were the highlights?

It's been a great year. I've had alot of success with my singles, and tons of touring, finishing off my album now to end the year out, so 2009 has been a busy one for me.

What is house music to you?

Well it's pretty much been my life for the last 12 years....Lately dance has been encompassing tons of other genres, which keeps it really interesting to me.

Do you prefer producing or DJing and why?

Both equally. When I make something in the studio, I can't wait to go play it out in a set.  When I DJ, I get ideas and can't wait to get into the studio to work them out. They both feed each other.

What do you aim to make people feel with your music?

I always have an emotion or memory in mind when I'm making a track, and I hope that it translates though when i finish the track out.

How has the scene changed in the years you have been involved?

Well genre's come and go, producers and DJs come and go...It's been a big blur since about 2003, I've pretty much been touring nonstop since then.  I think it’s going in a good direction, I only see it getting bigger all around
the world.

What's been influencing you this year - musically and otherwise?

Since I come from a hip hop/urban/rnb background, I'm really happy to see house music starting to mix with these genres, and happy to start to hear urban records using dance beats now. I'm really excited about what's going now.

How long each week do you spend looking for new music to play, and what do you look for?

I'm constantly on the lookout, checking promo emails for good tracks, checking beatport and dj download, etc.  I look for tracks that I see working on the dancefloor, ones that have something new and cool to add to my set.

What can people expect from your set at Pacha on Saturday?

Well of course I'll be playing my big records and a few of my classics, as well I have some really cool new remixes and records I'm working on that I want to test out.  On top of that I will be dropping some things I've picked
up here and there that I am feeling.
