January's Best Film Events

Naima Khan selects the five best film events taking place across London this month.

From 2nd January
The Avengers Marathon @ Prince Charles Cinema
Celebrating the shared ancestry of film geeks and comic book nerds, PCC are putting on a marathon of films inspired by Marvel comics including Edward Norton in The Hulk

4th January & 11th January

Q&As @ Bafta
A real love it or hate it novel, Sebastian Faulk's Birdsong has seen a West End stage adaptation and now prolific writer, Abi Morgan, has written the screenplay. She'll be taking questions at BAFTA along with director Philip Martin and actor Clemence Posey who you'll recognise from In Bruges.

What looks much more gripping and a lot less romantic is the conversation between producer Norma Percy and director Paul Mitchell, who are amongst others responsible for creating the BBC series Russia, Putin and The West.

9th January 2012

U.N. Me @ The Frontline Club
After you watch Ami Horrowitz' U.N. Me, you come away wanting to write a thesis on this flawed, probing film, though that could be just me. It questions the UN brand of wholesale peace keeping and charts Ami's attempts to interview some of the top dogs and researchers involved in this frequently contradictory, vitally important global organisation. The screening is followed by a Q&A with the director.

6th-15th January
London Short Film Festival @ Various Venues
A collection of the best short, snappy films have been selected by the LSFF team and will be screened at various venues including ICA and Curzon Soho. Their categories include Funny Shit, Leftfield and Luscious, Tales of the Unexpected and Here Come The Girls. Don't miss Michael Fassbender in Ed Sayer's Goldfish on Saturday 7th.

26th-29th January

London Comedy Film Festival @ BFI Southbank
The only festival to screen both Mike Leigh's Life is Sweet and The Muppets, The LoCo Film Festival has partnered with the BFI for four days of old and new comedy films as well as workshops and more.

That's your lot, apart from this early heads-up:

3rd-5th February
International Student Film Festival London @ Various Venues
LSIFF kicks off in the first few days of February. They've gathered a huge selection of the best student films including animation and documetaries from all over the world. Spoonfed got a sneak peek at some of the submissions and the quality is hugely impressive, so book tickets early.
