London for Kids

by: Spoonfed Team

Taking the kids out can be a harrowing experience. Short attention spans and cries of 'are we there yet' can render any frazzled parent knackered before the fun kicks in. Thankfully, the city of London boasts a plethora of kid-friendly activities that will keep the young 'uns occupied and sufficiently distracted from pressing buttons that should not be pressed. Whether you're planning a day out, hosting a birthday party or planning a vacation, options are aplenty.  Read on for some suggestions:

Museums and Exhibitions

The Natural History Museum is one of London’s most popular attractions, and they have dozens of Interactive Learning events specially designed to keep children entertained and informed – it is a must-visit for any family and there is plenty to hold the interest of all age groups. Across town, a permanent collection based around vintage toys and costumes, the V&A’s Museum of Childhood is renowned for its brilliant programme of exhibitions and events that give kids a chance to explore their creativity. The Museum is widely praised for their daily activities, which feature arts and crafts or games that educate children about the exhibits on offer.

If you venture a little outside of central London you will find the riveting Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden, the village where the late author wrote his most popular tales.

Theatre

There’s no shortage of performance art for children in London and the 60 year old Unicorn Theatre has a grand tradition in children’s entertainment that will appeal to the accompanying adults as well as kids. Another family favourite is the Polka Children’s Theatre, which offers a full programme of events and repeat performances of the most popular shows on a Saturday so whole families can attend. Those in the mood for something a bit different should make a beeline for the Puppet Theatre Barge. Moored on the Thames, this company specialises in innovative Marionette theatre projects which will thrill and entertain.

Aside from these dedicated children’s theatres, there are always regular shows aimed at kids produced by the larger West End theatres and classics such as Oliver! or Lion King that are sure to delight.

Entertainment and Attractions

Some of the larger London tourist attractions such as the London Dungeons and the Mirror Maze at Ripley’s Believe it or Not are very popular with children, but there are also some attractions aimed specifically at kids which are worth a visit.

When it comes time to relax, a visit to the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground is highly recommended. Situated in Hyde Park, this playground is home to a gigantic pirate ship complete with ropes and pulleys that will tire out even the most energetic seven-year-old.

If you end up needing a little time to yourself then simply choose from one of London’s many day workshops, which will give you a little break as well as teaching your kids some valuable new skills. Among the best ones available are The Kid’s Cookery School where they’ll learn how to make healthy food and The Circus Space where children as young as eight can pick up some nifty juggling or acrobatic skills.

When it comes to planning for a day in London for kids, it’s always best to look for colour, variety, energy and interactive events – fortunately all things that London provides in abundance for all ages.

Also this summer there's a great kids festival called Lollibop that is strictly a "big bash for little people" and promises to entertain your brood like no other.
