London Loves - the very best of December

Live music

OK, let’s get the Christmas shows out of the way first. First off we’ve got New York-based dream pop duo The Ravonettes playing Village Underground, a band who are never afraid to stick the odd Phil Spector song in there, and later on in the month, Emmy the Great and Tim Wheeler will be doing their traditional Xmas show at the Scala. Cult indie label Bella Union are also having a little soiree at the Union Chapel. On a slightly less festive note, classic '90s punk Rancid will be playing three shows at the Forum, while the mighty Ben Folds Five will be playing two dates at the Brixton Academy.

Comedy

Brilliant character comic Nick Mohammed plays the harebrained Mr Swallow in arguably his finest show to date and one of our favourite to come out of the 2012 Fringe. Award-winning Aussie comic Sam Simmons is back with an exhilarating hour of well-organised chaos and mind-boggling absurdity. Hot sketch trio Sheeps have a humdinger of a festive bash lined up and Bill Bailey brings religious dubstep, folk bouzouki, Horntallica, and a dub version of Downton Abbey to Hammersmith for one night only. Last, and by no means least, no one captures the bitter, Scrooge-like spirit of Christmas more perfectly than foul-mouthed Glaswegian Jerry Sadowitz

Theatre

Part club night, part theatre, Fuerzabruta is full of circus performance and dancing in one of the most energetic shows to end or begin the year with. There are still tickets available for new Martin Crimp play In The Republic of Happiness which takes place during an uneasy Christmas Dinner. Post Secret Live  is probably going to be a little gooey but it’ll also be awkwardly dark and very real. Seriously bizarre musical Salad Days, about two newly wed university grads, is surprisingly fantastic. Take our word for it. This has been an excellent year for spinning Shakespeare in new lights and we can’t wait to see what Phyllida Lloyd will do with her all female casting of Julius Caesar.

Clubbing

Dalston’s newest discotheque welcomes some old faces in the Disco Bloodbath crew, who’ve enlisted the services of Glasgow’s Optimo for a night of left-field house fun. Drawing influence from garage, grime, dancehall, house, jazz, RnB (we could go on forever) Spoonfed favourite WBeeza joins bass hero Mosca at XOYO. Jackmaster's Numbers label team up with promoters Black Atlantic for Numbers Warehouse Party at Oval Space and Cajmere, the man behind so many huge house tracks including 'Percolator', 'Brighter Days', and 'I Need You', comes to Corsica Studios with a rare DJ appearance for Beyond the Clouds.
