London Loves - the very best of March

London Loves - the very best of March

21 February, 2012
by: Spoonfed Team

The Spoonfed editorial team select the biggest and best events taking place in London this March.

The King's Speech

Theatre
Fighting off the steady return of Restoration comedy that has been creeping in since the start of the year, March makes a valiant effort to welcome the return of the modern classic with Waiting for Godot at The Albany, Filumena – with the unconquerable Samantha Spiro – at Almeida Theatre and A Clockwork Orange at Arcola. Classics we can celebrate this month include The Duchess of Malfi at The Old Vic and Taming of the Shrew at Richmond Theatre. Richmond will also house The King's Speech [pictured above] before its transfer to the West End, where you can also find Imelda Staunton in Sweeney Todd. NK

Art

After the blockbuster fest that was February, the London art world is taking a bit of a break this March, for a bit at least. The really big shows aren't until right at the end of the month, when Gillian Wearing's retrospective opens at the Whitechapel and the Wellcome Collection open their much-anticiapted investigation into Brains. Before that comes the National Gallery's innovative comparison between Turner and Claude; work by Louise Bourgeois at the Freud Museum; solo shows for Spencer Finch, Marcus Coates and Andrew Curtis; and Zoe Leonard turning Camden Arts Centre into a camera obsucra. Oh, and Affordable Art Fair of course. TJ

Clubbing
March brings some leftfield legends to London – there's Brainfeeder supremo Gaslamp Killer in the house for Earnest Endeavours, and label mates TEEBS and Samiyam for Soundcrash. Techno-wise there are some serious opportunities for techno workouts: Chris Liebing and Tommy Four Seven play at the CLR takeover; Blueprint honcho James Ruskin is joined by Luke Slater as Planetary Assault Systems at Cable; and Tief continue their excellent run with a DIYanamic showcase. Lifestyle
As usual, the first Saturday of the month is when Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair sets up shop at Spitalfields. The guys behind the ever popular Rooftop Film Club present Films at the Yard at a location near the Olympic site – expect the usual selection of cult classics and chick flicks. A screening and after-party for the Mod documentary New Faces is at The Book Club, and finally, celebrate the strength and inventiveness of women at the WOW Festival, at the Southbank Centre, which runs in conjunction with International Women's Day on the 8th. Live Music
Before they decided to concentrate on the December ones, the influx of artist playing the ATP festivals used to make March a pretty big month in the indie calendar. We were expecting 2012 to be a bit quieter, but with the reschedule of Jeff Magnum’s festival to the spring slot, London will be awash with lost looking American indie bands, from The Olivia Tremor Control at Cargo to experimental punks Scratch Acid and indie legends Tall Firs taking on the Garage. Those looking for something a little less beardy are also being spoiled this month, with The Shins playing The Forum, hotly tipped new boys Wu Lyf at Heaven and the modfather Paul Weller playing the Roundhouse. Comedy
This month heralds the return of the work in progress gig, as comics start warming up for Edinburgh. Tickets are cheap but remember that shows are very much still in the rough stage. From last year's Fringe, brilliant female duo Toby present a darkly comic playlet about sibling rivalry and Nick Helm returns with more songs, poetry and volume. You can see two outstanding narrative sketch shows back-to-back and some skillfully drawn and enjoyably silly character comedy from Cariad Lloyd. You can even catch Sarah Millican this month, as there are still tickets left to her tour shows at the Apollo. There's loads of tasty looking stuff on at new comedy venue DeanswaysComComedy present a gig themed on progress and Oyster Eyes have lined up a veritable smörgåsbord of sketch and stand-up fun on a boat.
