London Paper Announce Cancellation of Headliners Festival

London’s most widely distributed free paper has announced the cancellation of its much hyped Headliners Festival which was due to take place on 16th and 17th September. The event, which was organised in conjunction with MAMA festivals, was set to run over the course of these two nights, across a range of venues in the centre of the city including Madame Jojo’s, Heaven, The Borderline and Leicester Square Theatre, and promised a showcase of over 50 acts from some of the best upcoming artists. Confirmed acts were such popular bands as The Lemonheads, Magic Numbers, Biffy Clyro, Athlete, The Doves, Daniel Merriweather, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Frankmusik.

It was earlier reported on the 20th August that parent company News International planned to stop printing the free newspaper after it fell short of expectations in a competitive sector of the market. The close of the free paper puts an end to the London freesheet war which began in 2006 between News International and the Associated Newspapers London Lite. Perhaps only surprising in that it has taken so long to announce, organisers of the event have said “Both parties felt it would be inappropriate to go ahead with the event in light of thelondonpaper's imminent closure. It is with great regret that we have reached this decision, however investing in an event of this scale when the paper is due to close the following day would be an irresponsible move”.

Ticket holders have been advised to seek a refund by contacting the agent from where the tickets were purchased. The cancellation of the widespread event will no doubt leave many people disappointed and left looking for another opportunity to see the bands they’re missing out on, and will undoubtedly affect the many venues across the capital that were part of the event.
