Lyrix Organix Barbecue

Lyrix Organix Barbecue

It appears the best things really do come in small packages, Tomas Olesen was blown away by the Lyrix Organix cook up.

A very special little event took place on Sunday 11th July - and no we’re not talking the World Cup final here. Lyrix Organix hosted a BBQ in the sun-drenched courtyard of Graffik - London’s finest little graffiti gallery.

The backyard of Graffik is constantly repainted by guest writers and this time was the turn of Italian bombers the KNZ crew. Their pieces are really good and they turn out to be a lovely bunch of guys too, it’s a friendliness that pervades the barbecue as a whole and as Lyrix Organix head honcho Dan Tsu turns his talents to the grill suspended in the top of a shopping trolley the conversation and ice cold beer flows in equal abundance. This combination of charring meat, cold beer, and perfect summer vibes courtesy of DJs Trol23 and Khalil soon have everyone forgetting their hangovers and smiling in the blazing sunshine.

The colourful graffiti acts as a backdrop to equally colourful people and there’s a really lovely house-party vibe to the packed little L-shaped space as the first of the live p.a’s kicks off.

First up is Sarah Sayeed accompanied by a cajón and the beautiful and powerful beat poetry that ensues puts me in mind of many great female poets (poet 99 particularly) but is identical to none. She has an album out which comes highly recommended.

Next up was personal highlight – Lykez. She is a star and only 18. Her rap style lies somewhere between hip hop and dancehall sensibilities with properly fun call and return choruses and witty, sometimes belly-laugh, lyrics. Expect to see a lot more of her in the future.

Last up is rapper Crossbone. Good lyricism and excellent flow mark him as one to watch too. What ties him and the other live artists together, and indeed what makes Lyrix Organix so special is that it’s all about real music. There’s no bitches or bling in these lyrics and the three artists combine to leave the audience not just entertained but also feeling massively uplifted.

As we troop over the road to watch the World Cup final, I can’t help but feel I’ve had the best Sunday in town. Lyrix Organix nights come highly recommended but Lyrix Organix barbecues are to kill for.
