March: London Comedy

by: Spoonfed Team

The Spoonfed Comedy team selects the top five gigs in London this March,

Thursday 10th-Saturday 12th March
Golden Lizard
@ Soho Theatre

A delightfully bonkers action-adventure story, loosely based on a mission to find a missing library book called The Golden Lizard. Award-winning comics Henry Paker and Mike Wozniak play multiple characters in the story (essentially a series of sketches) from the book's author, the enigmatic scientist Floyd Vernon, to Roy, a librarian trainee with a fear of ladders and a talent for alphabetising. Don't try to get your head round the confusing plot, just sit back and enjoy the surreal flights of fancy and hilarious script.

Tuesday 15th-Saturday 19th March
John Moloney: Butterflies with Stretch Marks
@ Leciester Square Theatre

Having been in the comedy business for over 20 years, John Moloney is a smooth operator when it come to stand-up.  Combining observational humour with a dry, deadpan delivery style, Moloney has the pefect level of pathos and timing. By addressing observational subjects from a unique perspective and delivering some beautifully crafted punchlines along the way, he hits the mark every time.

Saturday 19th March

New Act of the Year Grand Final
@ The Barbican

This is a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of the comedy stars of tomorrow. Comedy veteran Arthur Smith returns to the Barbican this month to host the 28th New Act of the Year Finals, presenting the very best fresh comedy talent in the UK.

Established in 1982, the New Act of The Year show has helped most of the new wave of comedy acts get started on the big stage. Recent finalists include: Russell Brand, Catherine Tate, Gina Yashere, Shazia Mirza, Lee Nelsy Nelson, Rhod Gilbert, Abandoman, Andi Ohso and Frisky & Mannish and many, many more.

Saturday 26th March
Micky Flanagan: The Out Out Tour
@ Hammersmith Apollo

If anyone can attest to what a career boost appearing on Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow is, it's Micky Flanagan. After years playing the club circuit, he's now selling out big theatres and recently added 21 more dates to his Out Out tour to cater to public demand. It's about time too, we've never seen a gig where the affable stand-up hasn't managed to get the audience eating out of his hand.

Combining the best of his last two Edinburgh shows, Out Out draws on Flanagan's East End background. He ruthlessly deconstructs the Cockney myth with razor-sharp observational wit, telling a comic tale of his working class upbringing, where 'alphabetti spaghetti' is a luxury and a bottle of 'Blue Nun' the height of sophistication.

Tuesday 29th March-Friday 1st April
Doug Stanhope
@ Leicester Square Theatre

"I wonder if they have facey bars over in Afghanistan? You think for ten bucks you could go into some cave and look under the girls veil?"

The forthright and searingly honest American is back; on his first ever tour of the UK. Before a one-off show at the cavernous Hammersmith Apollo, he's performing a few dates over at the more intimate Leicester Square Theatre, a much nicer gig in our opinion. Although nice is probably not the right phrase to use where Stanhope's concerned.
