May: London Comedy

by: Spoonfed Team

The Spoonfed Comedy Team pick out the best gigs in London this May.

1st-2nd May
Camden Crawl Comedy
@ Abbey Tavern, Camden Head and Bar Fifty Five

The Camden Crawl has more comedy on than ever this year, spread over several venues managed by The Fix, The Underbelly and The Camden Fringe. The immense line-ups take place throughout the afternoon from 1pm-6pm but check out our guide (top link) for more details.
Best For: stumbling across your new favourite comic

Saturday 8th May
Live at the Chapel @ Union Chapel
Held every month in a lovely big church in Islington, tonight's gig features We Need Answers host Mark Watson, youngest ever Perrier winner Sean Hughes, stand-up veteran Arthur Smith, if.comedy winner Tom Basden and Shooting Stars' burger van man Angelos Epithemiou. Not much wrong with that line-up.
Best For: venue

Thursday 13th May
The Fix Presents Stewart Lee and Boothby Graffoe
@ The Black Heart
Master of the long joke Stewart Lee (recently listed as Channel 4's '12th greatest stand-up') and the wonderfully eccentric musical comedian Boothby Graffoe join forces tonight at Camden's Black Heart pub for a night of first class comedy.
Best For: special guests. That are actually rather good.

12th-15th May
Hans Teeuwen @ Soho Theatre

Absurdist Dutch comedian Hans Teeuwen is back in the capital this month with his 2009 show Smooth and Painful. The title appropriately sums up how most people react to his comedy. Some will delight in the sheer energy and diversity he brings to his performances as he whips through sketches, characters and songs at a rate of knots. Others might find his meandering stories and bizarre hand puppets an experimental step too far.
Best For: challenging your funny bone

Terry Alderton @ Bloomsbury Theatre

Rather like Teeuwen, Terry Alderton's schtick is a little hard to describe. Part theatre, part impressions, part improv, part creepy voices, his act has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Following enthusiastic encouragement from Eddie Izzard, he is now taking his ad-libbed set on a 'proper' tour, culminating in this show at the Bloomsbury Theatre.
Best For: genius physical clowning
