May: London Exhibitions

by: Spoonfed Team

The Spoonfed Arts Team pick out the biggest exhibitions opening in London this May.

Planting Paradise

From Monday 16th May
Planting Paradise @ Garden Museum
We frickin' love a good garden here at Spoonfed, and Tom Stuart-Smith has been responsible for some of the finest in the land. This summer the Garden Museum pays tribute to the winner of eight Chelsea Flower Show gold medals with an exhibition that tells the stories behind Stuart-Smith's elegant, clean designs.

From Thursday 19th May
Egon Schiele @ Richard Nagy
40 unseen works by brilliant Austrian artist Egon Schiele are unveiled this May and March at Richard Nagy's recently opened Old Bond Street gallery space. After featuring in recent exhibitions at the Royal Academy and Wellcome Collection as well as being the subject of a brilliant play about his life at Arcola Theatre, Schiele is once again at the forefront of our minds. And rightly so - this should be a seriously exciting show.

From Thursday 19th May
Catlin Art Prize @ The Tramshed
The Catlin Art Prize was launched to reward and encourage the next generation of contemporary artists. Unlike bigger awards like, say, the Turner Prize, the Catlin champions genuinely unknown artists, generally those who have just graduated from art school. The whole thing is organised by curator, gallerist and writer Justin Hammond, so the shortlisted artists are likely to reflect his personal taste. We're massive fans of Noemie Goudal and are tipping her to scoop the prize.

From Friday 20th May
Tommy Nutter @ Fashion & Textile Museum
When Tommy Nutter opened Nutters on Savile Row in 1969 did two things: one, it caused a thundering great shock to the street's venerable old tailors, for whom nothing had changed in about 50 years. And two, it shaped what made would be considered cool in both the 1960s and '70s. And now the Fashion and Textile Museum pays tribute to a tailoring legend.

From Friday 27th May
The Shape of Things to Come @ Saatchi Gallery
2011 sees Charles Saatchi turn his attention all things three-dimensional with his first exhibition dedicated entirely to sculpture. Yes, it's likely to have the usual Saatchi Gallery skew, but this is currently the best place in London for this kind of show, and with works on show by the likes of John Baldessari, Bjorn Dahlem, Oscar Tuazon and Rebecca Warren, this looks like required viewing.
