Celebrate storytelling with National Short Story Week!
It's National Short Story Week! You might be interested in this if you're a writer, a reader, a listener, a publisher, a know-it-all or maybe you used to own a book or once looked at a magazine, you might even have hopes of banging a librarian. Whatever your interest in words and stuff, you should know November 22nd - 28th is the nations dedicated period for celebrating diminutive literature.
We quite like the idea of a National Short Story Week because with short stories it's easier to tackle something outside your usual genre. Crime readers to meander into the world of sci-fi. The staunchly romantic lot might consider dabbling in political stuffs and the high-brow literati won't feel so guilty about picking up a wee bit of chick-lit if it's only a wee bit.
National Short Story Week also takes stories off the page. Reading silently to oneself is often a solitary affair until you can talk about the book or read it to someone else. This week, it's not only about reading but listening too. There's a nostalgic pleasure in being read to and bookshops and libraries across the city will be holding readings by authors and enthusiasts celebrating the art of storytelling.
We're also quite excited about Spoken Ink, a new online vault dedicated to downloadable audio books. Everyday this week Spoken Ink will be offering up a download for free. Today is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's How It Happened and tomorrow Mick Jackson's macabre tale of two spinsters, The Pearce Sisters, will be available. Check Spoken Ink's website for more info on other downloads and enjoy National Short Story Week!
