In what is possibly some of the most startling music-world news since Michael Jackson's death, Noel Gallagher has announced that he is quiting the super group Oasis. The news, announced in a short statement on the Oasis website read “It is with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight.” Gallagher blames the sudden departure on his brother and continues “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”

Although Oasis has boasted a heavy touring schedule this year, the group has canceled two festival gigs in less than a week – the V Festival and Rock en Seine in Paris. There had been numerous rumours regarding the Gallagher brother's tense relationship – including a revelation from Liam that the pair only ever interacted on stage while they no longer spoke and travelled separately. The announcement has caused shock amongst Oasis fans, many of whom rushed to read the statement on the Oasis website late Friday night in such numbers that the server crashed.

Oasis had a number of upcoming European shows planned for their tour but Noel Gallagher's apologetic statement and instant departure makes it clear that Oasis will be in no shape to carry through with their performance schedule.
