The Olympics closing ceremony will see the Gallagher brothers join forces with the remaining Beatles.

In the ultimate band re-union, Paul McCartney and Ringo Star are to reform The Beatles this summer with Liam and Noel Gallagher stepping in to join them.

The supergroup are to make a one-off appearance at the Olympic closing ceremony, performing songs from The Beatles' back catalogue in an hour-long show, including Oasis favourite Octopuses Garden. Sources close to Liam and Noel said “they're mad for it”.

The news undoubtedly peaks the current trend for band re-unions, with everybody from UK indie pioneers The Stone Roses to Inspiral Carpets, reforming this summer. One unlikely fan who's delighted by the news is the Queen, who has requested a front row seat and a Man City shirt signed by the foursome, one source close to the palace said “she's mad for it”.

Not everybody is happy with the news however. National treasure Cliff Richard is said to be upset at being overlooked for the closing ceremony gig, letting out an uncharacteristic four-letter tirade at the Gallaghers, adding “After all I've done at bloody Wimbledon!?”

Of course, Spoonfed's ever reliable music team have personal invitations to the gig and will be tweeting live throughout, just after we've run the 200m hurdles and won gold in the BMXing.
