Observer Music Monthly To Close

Observer Music Monthly To Close

Boo! Observer Music Monthly yesterday confirmed that they are to close, after a review of their profits in September found they were struggling financially. Despite much media speculation that the paper would fold altogether, owners Guardian Media have decided to combine all of its supplements, bar the Observer Food Monthly section which will continue stand alone.

Whilst Business and Media will merge with the main paper, Music will remain as an expanded supplement, alongside Sports. Observer editor John Mulholland told reporters: 'It has been a difficult few months for staff while we have worked through these changes as part of Guardian News & Media's publishing review, and some hard decisions had to be taken given the extremely challenging economic environment for newspapers.' In other words, watch your backs employees.

Of course Observer and Guardian newspapers have almost infinite cash to spend in their mission to provide quality left wing media. They're allowed to make a loss. Maybe this OMM rationalisation is no bad thing – we'll get a weekly dose instead. And we won't have to tolerate made up stuff like 'Mika is good'.

But it is going to be a major defeat in fusty Editor Joe Harrod's battle to appear down with the kids. Where is he going to get second hand musical cred now? Eh? Oh well it's a pretty hopeless case anyway.
