Andrew Lloyd Weber has confirmed today that the wheels are in motion for the arrival next year of a sequel to the iconic musical Phantom of the Opera. The show will launch simultaneously in three cities, one of which will definitely be London.
A daring project, to be sure, and only possible because there are literally millions of fans already out there, who'll be desperate to find out what happened next for the Phantom and his love object Christine. Apparently old age finds them re-united on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York.
Lloyd Weber doesn't seem to be slowing down. He's recently fronted the How Do we Solve A Problem Like Maria? televised talent search and is currently masterminding our 2009 Eurovision entry. One question he doesn't seem to have asked himself is 'does this stirring story really need a sequel?'
Oh well, it's probably a question of him quite liking the money. And if it's even half as good as the original, it will be a brilliant show.
