Linnie Reedman lights up the Basement at Leicester Square Theatre with a Miracle
Renowned for her dark comedy and ability to conjure unique and forgotten episodes, Reza DeWet revives something that might seem done to death. In Miracle – at the Leicester Square Theatre this January – the multi-award winning writer, with director Linnie Reedman, skilfully depicts the amusing, unpredictable plight of a touring theatre company during the Depression.
It’s 1936, and a troupe of travelling actors, like everyone else, are down on their luck, feeling the pinch and looking for somewhere to set up stage. An abandoned church in a small town looks like the perfect venue in which to scratch their creative itch. But with every nugget of good luck comes a torrent of potential pitfalls, and the thespians are challenged to uncover the many mysteries of their newfound home. Combining fantasy and baroque imagery, DeWet’s script and Reedman’s direction seek to capture that haunting era: so bleak it made every shard of good fortune seem like a hug in a mug.
A cast of six main characters is lead by television and stage veteran Susannah York, whose career spans five decades. One of her most noted roles was that of Alice in Syndey Pollack’s They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969). More recently, York has been performing her solo show The Loves of Shakespeare’s Women (2007) at King’s Head Theatre among other venues.
We predict this alternative to theatre land’s Christmas leftovers will be a beautifully crafted and refreshing production for the New Year.
