Speech Debelle Scoops Mercury Prize

Speech Debelle Scoops Mercury Prize

Yesterday was a momentous day for two reasons: one, Joe was finally proven right and two; Speech Debelle has snagged the coveted Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize for her album 'Speech Therapy', beating off stiff competition from the likes of La Roux, Florence and the Machine, Bat For Lashes and jazz outsiders The Invisible.

Receiving the award at a gala ceremony held at the swanky Grosvenor House Hotel to rather apt shouts of  'speech!' 'speech!', the rapper went on to thank her parents, fans and the guy who's name is on the cheque.

The first hip-hop album to clinch a Mercury Prize since Dizzee Rascal's 'Boy in da Corner', Debelle joins a glittering array of former winners that includes Badly Drawn Boy, Talvin Singh and M People. Remember them?

Speech Debelle is playing a show at the Scala on the 7th of October.
