It’s the end of an era as Keisha Buchanan, the only Sugababes member left from the band’s original line-up, has made a surprise and controversial exit from the group. A statement released on the Sugababes official website yesterday announced that ‘the current line-up of the Sugababes has disbanded’. While Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah remain as members, Buchanan has been replaced by Jade Ewen, who represented the UK in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
According to the statement, Buchanan - who formed Sugababes with Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy in 1998 – will continue to record for Island Records as a solo artist. But it seems the 24-year-old has no plans to go quietly. Leaving a series of vague messages on her Twitter account yesterday, the mouthy Sugababe who once called Mark Ronson ‘a bit of a knob’ hinted that she had been forced out of the group against her will.
‘Although it was not my choice to leave, it’s time to enter a new chapter in life...Sometimes a breakdown of communication and lack of trust can result in many different things,’ she said. She stopped short of pointing fingers, saying: ‘I would like to state that there were no arguments, bullying or anything of the sort that lead to this...I would also like to point out that I have always supported the girls and they have also supported me’.
Oh dear, after 11 years of chart-topping success, what’s the girl to do now? Let’s hope her solo career goes more the way of Beyonce than Victoria Beckham. If she’s considering other vocations, teaching English probably isn’t one of them, judging from this grammatical howler she left on Twitter: ‘I want to thank the Sugababes fans and my fans for all your support and all who have never judged me, but excepted (sic) me for who I am... This is not the end... but the beginning!’
Meanwhile, the new Sugababes album ‘Sweet 7’ will be released on November 23rd.
