Distinguished literary playwright decides to withdraw £1,500 and is robbed immediately after.

What kind of person withdraws £1,500 in cash and walks through London's West End with it? The 76-year-old playwright Alan Bennett and other folks with more money than sense.

The talented playwright, a stalwart figure of the British theatre scene is the latest victim of the West End's ice-cream robbery scam. After Bennett made a withdrawal at a cashpoint, two morally deficient, frozen-treat-toting miscreants splattered Bennet with ice-cream and stole his wallet which contained £1,500. Cruelly distracting him by pretending to clean his jacket, they left the distinguished literary playwright “red-faced and flustered” according to onlookers. Bennet was taken into an M&S where he gave details of the incident and told policemen “I shall be writing about it in my diaries." Stick it to 'em Alan.

A policeman has explained that detectives from the “Camden robbery squad” are on it and an investigation is under way to determine what went down during the alleged robbery.
