Alan Ayckbourn's classic comedy arrives at Duke of York Theatre
Alan Ayckbourn's hit romantic comedy Bedroom Farce is to transfer to the West End where it will play at Duke of York's Theatre until July.
Revived by Peter Hall at Rose Theatre in 2009, the farcical comedy about four couples, their blazing rows and secret liasons, will star much of the same cast including Tony Gardner, Sara Crowe, Daniel Betts, Finty Williams and Rachel Pickup.
The play was last seen in the West End in 2002 when the cast included Richard Briers and June Whitfield. Ayckbourn has admitted seeing himself in all four of the male characters in the play which was first produced in 1977 and directed by the very same Peter Hall. A prominent theatrical theme in the mid-late 1970s, marriage and relationships amongst the British suburban middle class never loses its comic side. Often ludicrous and a little slapstick, Bedroom Farce is a brilliant example of Ayckboun's wise and knowing social commentary wrapped up though it may be in marketable comedy. And the theme seems to be making a resurgence if only briefly with Noel Coward's Private Lives down the street at Vaudeville Theatre.
