Landlords choose not to renew fringe venue's lease ahead of the Olympics

The twenty year-old fringe theatre venue, Greenwich Playhouse, appears to be the latest casualty of the Olympics as it announced this evening that it will be closed in April 2012.
The landlords of the premises, Beds and Bars, a company that offers hostel accommodation to backpackers, have chosen not to renew the venue's lease.
Artistic director, Alice DeSousa has said of the closure: "It is regrettable that the theatre’s landlord Beds and Bars, who have benefited for eleven years from generous revenue generated by the theatre’s substantial trade, should have their sights focused on such short term objectives as the Olympics."
The venue is currently seeking support from Greenwich Council to find a new premises. Its final production will be The Duchess of Malfi, which runs from 21st February until 18th March.
