Naima Khan looks back at October's theatreland happenings.
Halloween
October is Halloween month yo! And the kids had half-term off school – lucky gits – so we got you guys clued up with some of the best interactive horror happenings and the more conventional Halloween theatre and Half Term Fun
No Thank You
There were some absolutely dire plays about this October, namely Or You Could Kiss Me which didn't do much for Emma's diminishing will to live. The Country at Arcola Theatre didn't do much for mine either and Radio Z by Stan's Cafe pretty much killed me.
Yes Please
Some good shows like Love in the Insecurity Zone were as joyously zany as we thought they'd be (Niki Flacks told as about that gem ages ago), Traces was ace and The Charming Man was some fun political satire. Numpties in the broadsheets got a little hoity toity about the challenges of politics in theatre though, but we liked it.
Flashdance the Musical! was also splendiferous so we heard from our blogger friends, though we never actually got round to seeing it. We're also a little gutted we missed out on the Bloomsbury Festival – we hear they had good food.
What The!?
One of the most 'interesting' pieces of theatre we saw this month was Pullman, WA by experimental theatremaker Young Jean Lee. Emma got to chat to her about goitres, among other things. Here's our joint review of the show, which took an hour to tell us how to live and be happy. Speaking of being happy, there are many Reasons to be Cheerful over at Theatre Royal Stratford East so Emma found. She also insisted the Spooners reveal their own reasons to be cheerful, so we did.
This month I disappeared for a while to mess around at the BFI London Film Festival but I did get time to reminisce about the one of a kind monthly open mic night that is SpeechMotion and interview the woman behind it, Lennie Varvarides in My London. For recommendations for next month see our November Top Five.
