Olivier Award Winners announced and special SOLT award presented  to Stephen Sondheim by Angela Lansbury

The Olivier Awards took place last night at Theatre Royal Drury Lane where the big winners were National Theatre and Legally Blonde, whilst (rather unsurprisingly) Royal Court and Donmar Warehouse also did well.

Surprise guest presenter Angela Lansbury and theatre producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh presented the Society of London Theatre's Special Award to composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. In a champion win for smaller productions, La Boheme by Opera Up Close and Soho Theatre won Best New Opera Production, indicating the future of the work from companies like Little Opera House and The Opera Group.

After The Dance which ran at Lyttleton Theatre saw Nancy Caroll take home Best Actress, Bunny Christie take home Best Set Design and Adrian Scarborough win Best Supporting Actor. Director Thea Sharrock won for Best Revival, beating out When We Are Married, King Lear, and favourite to win, All My Sons. Accepting her award she joked, “I'm a huge Arsenal fan so I'm not used to winning.”

National Theatre also won in the Best Director category which went to Howard Davis for The White Guard and Best Lighting Design for Neil Austin's work on the same production.

Legally Blonde, despite being a US import, won Best New Musical and Sheridan Smith and Jill Halfpenny both won in their respective categories. Royal Court's production Clybourne Park won Best New Play which went to writer Bruce Norris. Clybourne Park is now at Wyndhams Theatre in the West End and Michelle Terry won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Tribes.

Recently at Sadler's Wells, the team behind contemporary dance piece Babel dominated the dance categories. Other winners are as follows:

:  Nancy Caroll for After The Dance at National Theatre

Best Supporting Actress
